The very first pocket computers (PC-1201) just memorized key presses and stored the sequence in memory.  See sample PC-1201 program.

Next (EL-5100) came the Algebraic Expression Reserve (AER) mode which allowed you to enter an expression and the calculator would evaluate it.  The result could be stored in a memory and recalled.

With the PC-1210/11, Sharp introduced a simplified BASIC language (known as S-BASIC) to their pocket computers.  There were many variations of the S'-BASIC and S-BASIC versions, with later versions being supersets of the early ones.

S'-BASIC (S-prime) was the initial BASIC. It appeared first in the PC-1210/PC-1211 machines.  It uses a very efficient single-byte tokenizing system which was able to put every BASIC statement into a single byte.  There was no ability for upper/lower case letters.

S-BASIC appeared in the PC-1260, PC-1350 and PC-1401 (EL-5500II) machines.  It uses a two-byte tokenizing system and has quite a few more statements than S'-BASIC.  Programs written in S'-BASIC can generally (but not always) be transferred to machines that use S-BASIC although some minor tweaking of the program might be required.

The PC-1500/PC-1600 are Z80-based machines and used a different version of BASIC.

Level Converters Level Converters change the 5 volt TTL logic levels to a RS-232 +/- 12v standard.  They are used to connect the calculators to a standard RS-232 port.

Very few of these are available now, but you can built your own by following these excellent instructions by Andrew Woods.

To upload a BASIC program from the PC-1360 or other calculator with a 15-pin SIO connector to a PC, you need a level converter and this Upload program.  Run the program with no arguments (i.e., just type Upload.exe) to get a help screen.

This is a DOS program and can be run from a DOS prompt in Win98 or earlier.  It also works in a command window with Windows 2000/SP3, but has not been tested with other versions of the NT/2K/XP family.
